God gave you a special angel who watches over you every single day!
Did you know that from the very first moment you were born, God gave you your very own angel? This special angel is called your Guardian Angel, and their one job is to watch over you, protect you, and help guide you closer to God.
Angels are spiritual beings created by God. They don't have bodies like we do — they are pure spirit. But they are real, they are powerful, and they love God with all their being. Your Guardian Angel was chosen by God especially for you!
The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Guardian Angels on October 2nd every year! It's like a birthday party for your angel friend.
Your Guardian Angel is always by your side. Here are some of the wonderful things they do:
They protect you from danger — both physical danger and spiritual danger. They whisper good thoughts into your heart to help you make the right choices. They pray for you and bring your prayers to God. They comfort you when you're sad or afraid. And they rejoice with you when you do something kind or brave!
Your Guardian Angel never takes a break, never sleeps, and never leaves you. Even when you can't see them or feel them, they are right there with you.
The Bible is full of stories about angels! The Angel Gabriel told Mary she would be the mother of Jesus. Angels appeared to the shepherds on the night Jesus was born, singing "Glory to God in the highest!" An angel rolled away the stone from Jesus' tomb on Easter morning.
In the Old Testament, angels protected Daniel in the lions' den, guided the people of Israel through the desert, and delivered messages from God to His people. Angels are God's messengers and helpers, and they've been part of His plan from the very beginning.
The word "angel" comes from a Greek word that means "messenger." That's what angels are — God's special messengers!
There are many, many angels, and they are organized into nine groups called "choirs." The highest choirs — the Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones — are closest to God and worship Him constantly. The middle choirs — Dominions, Virtues, and Powers — help govern creation. And the lowest choirs — Principalities, Archangels, and Angels — are the ones who interact most with us on earth.
Your Guardian Angel belongs to this last group, but don't think that makes them less important! Every angel, no matter which choir they belong to, is incredibly powerful and full of God's glory.
You can talk to your Guardian Angel anytime! You don't need a special prayer or a special place. Just speak from your heart. But there is a beautiful traditional prayer you can learn:
"Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light, to guard, to rule, and guide. Amen."
Try saying this prayer every morning when you wake up and every night before you go to sleep. It's a wonderful way to start and end your day with your heavenly friend!
