What Is a Rosary?

A rosary is a string of beads that helps us count our prayers. The word rosary means "a garden of roses." Every Hail Mary we pray is like giving Mary a beautiful rose. And Mary always brings us closer to her Son, Jesus.

How Does It Work?

The big beads are for the Our Father. The small beads come in groups of ten, and they are for the Hail Mary. A group of ten is called a decade.

While we pray, we think about a story from the life of Jesus and Mary. These stories are called mysteries.

You don't have to pray the whole Rosary. One decade is a wonderful prayer, and it only takes about five minutes.

1. The Annunciation

The angel Gabriel tells Mary she will be the mother of Jesus, and Mary says yes to God.

Let's think about: How can I say yes to God today?

2. The Visitation

Mary hurries to help her cousin Elizabeth, who is going to have a baby too.

Let's think about: Who can I help today?

3. The Nativity

Jesus is born in Bethlehem and laid in a manger.

Let's think about: Jesus came as a little baby because He loves us.

4. The Presentation

Mary and Joseph bring baby Jesus to the Temple to offer Him to God.

Let's think about: I belong to God too.

5. The Finding in the Temple

After searching for three days, Mary and Joseph find Jesus in the Temple, in His Father's house.

Let's think about: I can always find Jesus in church.

1. The Baptism of Jesus

John baptizes Jesus in the Jordan River, and God the Father says Jesus is His beloved Son.

Let's think about: When I was baptized, I became God's child too.

2. The Wedding at Cana

At a wedding, Mary tells Jesus the wine has run out, and Jesus turns water into wine.

Let's think about: Mary tells us, "Do whatever He tells you."

3. Jesus Announces the Kingdom

Jesus teaches about God's Kingdom and invites everyone to turn back to God.

Let's think about: Jesus always forgives us when we are sorry.

4. The Transfiguration

On a mountain, Jesus shines with bright light, and His friends see His glory.

Let's think about: Jesus is the Son of God.

5. The Eucharist

At the Last Supper, Jesus gives us His Body and Blood.

Let's think about: Jesus is really with us in Holy Communion.

1. Jesus Prays in the Garden

The night before He dies, Jesus feels very sad, and He prays and trusts His Father.

Let's think about: I can pray when I feel sad or scared.

2. Jesus Is Hurt by the Soldiers

Soldiers hurt Jesus, and He accepts it out of love for us.

Let's think about: Jesus loves me even when it's hard.

3. The Crown of Thorns

Soldiers make fun of Jesus and put a crown of thorns on His head.

Let's think about: I can be kind even when others are unkind.

4. Jesus Carries His Cross

Jesus carries His heavy cross, and a man named Simon helps Him.

Let's think about: I can help others carry hard things.

5. Jesus Dies on the Cross

Jesus dies on the cross to save us from sin, and Mary stays close to Him.

Let's think about: Jesus loves me this much.

1. The Resurrection

On Easter Sunday, Jesus rises from the dead!

Let's think about: Jesus is alive and with us.

2. The Ascension

Jesus goes up to Heaven and promises to be with us always.

Let's think about: Jesus is always with me.

3. The Holy Spirit Comes

The Holy Spirit comes upon Mary and the apostles like tongues of fire.

Let's think about: The Holy Spirit helps me be brave.

4. The Assumption

At the end of her life on earth, God takes Mary, body and soul, into Heaven.

Let's think about: God wants me in Heaven too.

5. The Coronation of Mary

Mary is crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth.

Let's think about: Mary is my mother, and she prays for me.
