One God, three Persons — the most beautiful mystery of our faith!
The Holy Trinity is one of the most amazing things about God. It means that there is only one God, but He exists as three Persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. All three are fully God, and all three are one. It's a beautiful mystery!
We know it can be hard to understand — even grown-ups find it mysterious! But that's okay. Some things about God are so wonderful and big that our minds can't fully grasp them. That's what makes God so awesome.
St. Patrick used a three-leaf clover (shamrock) to explain the Trinity to the people of Ireland. One clover, three leaves — one God, three Persons!
God the Father is the creator of everything — the stars, the mountains, the oceans, the animals, and you! He made the whole universe out of love, and He watches over it all. Think of Him as the most loving, powerful Dad you can imagine, but even bigger and more wonderful than that.
God the Father sent His Son Jesus to save us, and He sends the Holy Spirit to be with us. Everything begins with His love.
God the Son is Jesus. He has always existed with the Father, but about 2,000 years ago, He came to earth and became a human being. He was born of the Virgin Mary, lived among us, taught us about God's love, and gave His life on the Cross to save us from sin.
Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday and now sits at the right hand of the Father in Heaven. But He is also with us always — especially in the Eucharist and in our prayers.
The Holy Spirit is God's loving presence living inside of us. After Jesus went back to Heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit to be our helper, our comforter, and our guide. The Holy Spirit came to the Apostles at Pentecost as tongues of fire and a mighty wind!
You received the Holy Spirit at your Baptism, and He gives you special gifts to help you be brave, wise, kind, and close to God. We'll learn more about these amazing gifts on the Virtues & Gifts page!
Every time you make the Sign of the Cross — "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" — you are honoring the Holy Trinity!
Imagine a family where the love between the parents is so strong that it becomes a third person — that's a little bit like the Trinity! The Father loves the Son, the Son loves the Father, and that love is so real and powerful that it is the Holy Spirit.
The three Persons of the Trinity are always together, always loving, always working in perfect harmony. And the best part? They invite you to be part of their family too. When you were baptized, you became a child of God — a member of His family forever.
